8/4 - 8/17 JCPenney Round-Up
Your back-to-school shopping could help change a life. Shop at JCPenney in the Annapolis Mall and round your purchase up to the nearest dollar. The JCPenney After School Fund will donate the difference to BGCAA to help provide youth in our community access to life-enriching afterschool programs.
Two local teens were selected by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County to receive scholarships to attend International Summer School in Gordonstoun, Scotland. The scholarship, provided by the Boys & Girls Scholarship Trust, provides the opportunity to interact with boys and girls from other parts of the world and experience life in a foreign country. All this with the backdrop of Scotland's magnificent scenery and everything it has to offer in sports and recreation. Runners and walkers braved the heat for the inaugural Be Great 5K Run & Fun Walk at Quiet Waters Park on Sunday morning. Miss Maryland Junior, National Teenager, Meghan Norwood greeted the participants and handed out Be Great T-shirts prior to the race. For more about the 5K click here.
Construction is complete on the new Admiral Oaks Boys & Girls Club in Annapolis. The renovation, which started in November 2009, gives the community greater resources including a larger Club, an updated facility, space for a pool table and games room, and even a SMART board for the learning center. Community leaders turned out in full-force for the Grand Reopening celebration with CPDC on June 24th.
Chili's on Forest Drive in Annapolis hosted a BGCAA fundraiser from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. They donated 20% of sales to sending kids to Summer Camp at BGCAA. Thank you Chili's for helping our community kids get a chance to go to Summer Camp.
6/11: Club Awards Ceremony & Fashion Show Guests of BGCAA enjoyed a Fashion Show and Awards Ceremony at the Boys & Girls Club at Bates. The festivities kicked-off at 6:00 p.m. a
nd were presented by the Boys & Girls Club Bywater Branch.
5/22: Torch Club Summit
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County hosted the Maryland State Torch Club Summit on Saturday. The Summit titled "Relentless Pursuit of Leaders" encouraged young people, ages 11 to 13, to make positive life choices and reach their full potential through their leadership decisions. 5/10: Badges for Baseball Launches
The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office, BGCAA, Speaker Michael Busch, and the Honorable Laura Kiessling helped launch Badges for Baseball. Read the attached press release for more details about the program or view a video of the Press Conference here.
Hundreds joined BGCAA, Light House Shelter, Box of Rain, Anne Arundel County CASA and Vision Workshops for the annual 5K walk benefiting the kids of our community who need us most. The 5K walk kicked off at 8:00 a.m. and wound through the streets of Annapolis. Walkers were lead by a young bagpiper and a marching band, and after they completed the 5K were welcomed back to the stadium to enjoy a moon bounce, face painters, games, activities, snacks, and a whole assortment of activities. 5/5 & 5/6: Planetarium Trip Proves Enlightening
Smart Girls & Passport to Manhood visited the USNA planetarium where they got to see the night sky from the Equator, the North Pole and the South Pole. Astro Physics Professor, Elise Albert, then gave our members a tour of the solar system enlightening them about the constellations and planets we see from Annapolis. Midshipmen were also on hand to encourage the young guests to set high goals and work hard to make them happen. Several of our Passport to Manhood members were so moved by Midshipmen that they are dedicating themselves to getting into the US Naval Academy after High School. To quote Dr. Clark "Corky" Graham "you just never know what becomes the tipping point in these young lives".
5/5: Bayside Business Club Season Kick-Off
The 2nd Annual BBC kicked off on May 5th! Moveable Mixtures provided beer/wine/signatures cocktails and California Tortilla provided the tasty treats. The networking festivites took place at the Annapolis Sailing School and all proceeds benefitted BGCAA. Contact LSeborowski@bgcaa.com for details.
5/1: MD Food Bank and BGCAA Address Hunger & Nutrition
Through the Hot Meals initiative with the Maryland Food Bank, BGCAA has served 11,200 hot meals since 1/11/10 in an effort to eradicate childhood hunger. That number reflects local youth receiving hot, healthy, nutritious dinners at all five of our Clubs.
4/28: Pitch, Hit & Run Competition
The Boys & Girls Club at Bates (121 South Villa Road in Annapolis) hosted an exciting baseball/softball skills competition that provided boys and girls, ages 7 to 14, the opportunity to showcase their pitching, hitting and running abilities. The event was FREE and open to the public.
4/22 - 4/28: Earth Day Clothing Drive @ H&M
In the spirit of taking responsibility for the earth, being green and recycling appropriately, beginning on Earth Day and continuing through April 28, H&M ran an in-store campaign encouraging customers to make donations of gently used kids clothing. Those who did received a 20% in-store discount coupon.
BGCAA hosted a Comcast Cares Day site project on Saturday, April 24th from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Bates Boys and Girls Club in Annapolis. Comcast Cares…Kids Community Day was a free event and open to the public. The day was designed to give kids and volunteers a chance to experience the Boys & Girls Club with FREE food and drinks, t-shirts, 3 on 3 Basketball, Wii Bowling and Tennis, and Billiards. The focus of the day was Health and Wellness and included stuffing 500 Summer Camp BackPacks for the BGCAA kids! More details coming soon.
4/22: KidWalk Fundraiser @ Fado Irish Pub
Thank you to all who came out to Fado to support KidWalk. Proceeds will benefit five local charities including BGCAA, Light House Shelter, Box of Rain, Anne Arundel County CASA, and Vision Workshops. Mark your calendars for KidWalk on May 8th.

Club members went on a College Tour of the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore on April 23rd lead by Kenyatta Rowel.
4/21: Colonial Challenge Cup
Drivers enjoyed driving vehicles on a demanding two-mile track without the restrictions of everyday traffic and the standard road obstacles like the police, Sunday drivers and Mini Vans. Track Day provides an opportunity to drive your own vehicle on a track where you will learn new driving skills, revitalize the ones you have forgotten and apply the ones you will learn "correctly" in a controlled environment with a professional instructor at your side.
3/24- 4/6: Round-Up at JC Penney
The Spring Afterschool Round-Up results are in and boy did the community round-em' up! JC Penney Associates focused on making sure to ask every customer, and when they asked, the customer said "yes!" Customer participation in the April Round-Up reached 26.7% nationwide and 30% in Annapolis - a record for any single Round-Up event. The Spring Round-Up event raised more than $1,300,000 nationwide for the essential afterschool programs that help children in need to become smart, strong and socially responsible. The next Round-Up is scheduled for August 4-17, just in time for Back to School.
4/6: Volunteer Fair
BGCAA participated in The Brick Companies' Volunteer Fair at the Golf Club at South River. The Fair is part of The Brick Companies' initiative to encourage volunteerism among their employees.
4/1: Friends & Family at Chuck E. Cheese's
Join the Boys & Girls Club at Bates at Chuck E. Cheese's for Friends & Family Night. All proceeds from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. will help us send members of the Club to the National Keystone Conference in Pittsburgh. Chuck E. Cheese's is located on Forest Drive in Annapolis.
3/25: RelianceNet's Pat Cooley wins Good Chip Award
The Chesapeake Tech Council Awarded Pat Cooley and RelianceNet the Good Chip Award at their dinner on March 25th. Dr. Clark "Corky" Graham and the LET'S GO program also received accolades.
3/24: Youth of the Year Dinner
The YOY Dinner was a huge success thanks to our community supporters, sponsors, board members, partners, Club members, and staff. The winner of the 2010 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County is....Wayland Mullins. This is Wayland's third year as the Bywater Club winner and his first year as the BGCAA winner. Scholarships were also given out by the Annapolis Boys & Girls Scholarship Trust to study this summer at Gordonstoun International Summer School in Scotland. Scholarship recipients are Kevin Jackson and Ebony Acton.

2/25: Career Launch Seminar
The Boys & Girls Clubs kicked off the Career Launch Seminar Series with a fabulous career seminar delivered by ten Northrop Grumman professionals. More than 100 teens, staff, volunteers, and members of the board of directors enjoyed the interactive seminar. Eight panelists shared their inspiring stories with the group. The Career Launch Seminar Series is a free program focused on helping teens develop a career plan and a roadmap for their future. Support BGCAA's LET's GO program at Metro Diner, in Parole Town Center, on February 24th. From 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. you will enjoy Metro's weekly family night festivities, meet some LET'S GO Team members, see Robots in action and dine for a good cause. Best of all...20% of all proceeds will benefit BGCAA's LET'S GO initiative.

Bates Middle School will hold its science fair at the Bates Boys & Girls Club from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Over 250 display posters illustrate the wonderful science research projects completed by the Bates Middle School students including many of our Club members. Come be a part of "A Night For Science" and listen to great speakers and witness some exciting science. Guest Speakers: Channel 9 Meteorologist Devon Lucie, Maritime Museum Coordinator Charlotte Church, and Naval Academy Football Players Osei Asante (co-captain and guard), Greg Zingler (quarterback) and Billy Yarborough (defensive end). Join BGCAA and The Green Turtle as we raise funds for the sports department. All day and night on January 19th (11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.) 10% of your bill will be donated to the Club. It's THAT easy! The monumental blizzard of 2009 may have postponed some of the Club holiday parties but it did not put a damper on the spirit of the season. See the joy of the season come to life here. 12/22: Children's Wishes Granted by Annapolis Mall
Christmas will arrive on Tuesday, December 22nd for twelve twenty four children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, as well as one lucky child who placed his wish at Westfield Annapolis’ Santa’s Workshop. During a “Wishes and Dreams” Ceremony at 7pm at Westfield Annapolis, the actual wishes of these children will be granted...and excerpts from their letters will be shared. Santa will be on hand to spread his holiday cheer and take pictures with all of the recipients.See the article in The Capital.
12/6 - 12/18: Toy Drive Hosted by YA's and Stoney River
Help us make sure every child has a happy holiday. The Young Advocates and Stoney River Legendary Steaks are hosting a Toy Drive through December 18th. Donate a new, unwrapped, toy to the toy box at Stoney River and they will be distributed to children in the Annapolis area. Toys can be dropped off from 11:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, until 10:30 p.m. Friday/Saturday and until 9:00 p.m. on Sundays.
12/4 - 12/27: Drinks for Charity at Punk's Backyard Grill
From December 4 to 27, Punk’s will donate $0.15 for each beer, specialty cocktail, and glass of wine purchased. After making a beer, wine, or cocktail purchase, guests will “donate” the used bottle cap or cork to one of the three charities to receive their portion of Punk’s pledged donation. On December 28, the bottle caps and corks “donated” to each charity will be tallied and Punk’s will present each charity with the full contribution.

12/16: Marching Blue Devils, From New York, March Their Way Into BGCAA Hearts
In late November the Bates neighborhood was filled with the sound of drums, pipes and cheers as a Victor, New York marching band practiced their routines on the Bates ball field. Thanks to the quick thinking of Barry Valentine the Bates field was used as a contingency plan when a local Community College decided at the last minute that the NY band, practicing for an upcoming competition at Navy Stadium, could no longer use their field. Bates was the perfect fit, and happened to be available on that Saturday afternoon. The band was very grateful and thanked our team for their last minute efforts. Then, a month later, BGCAA received two checks in the mail. One from the Marching Blue Devils Booster Club, and a matching check from Skip Lehman of Mack2 Management. Three cheers for the Marching Blue Devils. Go Team!
12/4 - 12/13: JC Penney Round-Up
It's that time of year again, when your spare change could change a life! When you shop at JC Penney in the Annapolis Mall between December 4 and December 19 and round your purchase up to the next whole dollar, the JCPenney Afterschool Fund will donate the difference to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County to provide children in this community with access to life-enriching afterschool programs. So, from December 4 through 13 remember to Round-Up for kids at JC Penney in the Annapolis Mall.
12/12: First LEGO League Regional Tournament
Results are in from the Regional tournament and all five Clubs sent very impressive teams. One team from the Bywater Club even earned a berth in the State Championship this January. Check it out.
12/11: BGCAA Announces Partnership with Maryland Food Bank
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County (BGCAA) and The Maryland Food Bank are working together in a pilot five-week BackPack program, and an ongoing Hot Meals initiative. The mission of the BackPack program is to help alleviate child hunger by providing hungry children with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food at times when other resources are not available. The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, nonperishable, healthy and easily consumed. Backpacks are discreetly distributed on Fridays, for a five-week period, at each Boys & Girls Club to children at-risk of hunger and intended for preparation and consumption at their place of residence. Backpacks maintain a level of confidentiality by not making the food visible to other children, which helps to protect the dignity of the children. The Hot Meals initiative kicks-off on January 4th and will provide a hot, nutritious, meal to all Club members from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. These meals, provided by the Maryland Food Bank, will allow members of the Clubs to focus on programs which enrich their lives and not the basic necessities of life.
12/9: The Master's Club Donation
On Wednesday, December 9th The Master's Club of Anne Arundel County presented a check for $1,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County. 11/18: NASA Astronaut Visits the Club
NASA Astronaut Paul Richards joined us at Bates to speak to an assembly of members from all five of our Clubs on Wednesday, November 18th. Upon arrival Mr. Richards helped several of our Let's Go members with a science project determining the size and distance of planets. After a tour of our Robotics Center with Dr. Corky Graham, Mr. Richards was ushered up to the gymnasium to speak to a room filled with eager members, a dozen visiting Midshipmen and staff from all of our clubs. After a 20 minute DVD presentation and a lively question and answer session, Mr. Richards led the kids through a quick hands-on exhibit of his log books, space food, space suit and other interesting articles from his space journey. As you will see in the attached photos 'our' NASA Astronaut was open to photographs with our kids, staff, and CPO! Thank you Mr. Hyman and Mr. Richards for bringing this inspirational presentation to our clubs.

11/8: Local Family Needs Our Help
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, the Naval Academy Athletic Association and the Brigade of Midshipmen sponsored a drive to help a family in need. On October 4th, a local family lost everything in a house fire. The collection of house supplies, kitchen necessities, linen,
etc. was held at the Bates Boys & Girls Club located at 121 South Villa Avenue, Annapolis on Sunday, November 8th from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM.
11/4: Grant Awarded to BGCAA for Money Matters Program
As part of its continued commitment to promoting financial literacy, Charles Schwab Foundation has awarded Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County a $6,000 grant to implement Money Matters: Make It CountSM, a program designed to help Club members build basic money management skills.
10/29: Young Advocates of BGCAA Halloween Party and Fundraiser
Come one...come all! On Thursday, October 29th, the Young Advocates are hosting a Halloween Happy Hour to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County. Don your favorite Halloween costume and head down to Armadillo's from 6pm - 9pm for a goulish good time! $20 donation includes appetizers and drink specials. Prizes awarded for best costume.
10/29: Food Bank Produce Give-Away
On Thursday, October 29th, The Boys & Girls Club at Freetown Village will be hosting the Maryland Food Bank's Produce Give-Away Program. Maryland Food Bank delivers fresh produce directly into communities acrosst the state. Each delivery is geared toward 200 families and consists of approximately 6,000 pounds of produce. 10/22: Lights On Afterschool
On October 22, more than 7,500 local Lights On Afterschool events will be held in communities throughout the country, involving more than one million people. Each of our clubs is participating in the October 22nd Lights On Afterschool event. Join us as JCPenney celebrates ten years as the leading corporate advocate for afterschool. According to a new survey, sponsored by JCPenney Afterschool Fund and organized by the Afterschool Alliance, there’s good reason to celebrate. America After 3PM, a survey of nearly 30,000 households across the United States, shows that 8.4 million children are now attending afterschool programs, up from 6.5 million in 2004.
10/21: Front Page News!The Capital features the BGCAA Robotics Program
The Capital featured BGCAA's LET'S GO program on the front page of the local newspaper. LET'S GO is an acronym for Leadership, Engineering, Technology & Science Generating Opportunities. It's the Club's version of the public school's STEM program - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. "We're testing the model here," said Dr. Clark "Corky" Graham, who retired recently as senior vice president of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. Graham is spearheading a pilot program at all five of the clubs in Anne Arundel County. If it is successful, he hopes to eventually roll the program out to all 4,300 locations nationwide, which serve more than 4.5 million youth.

8/16/09: Freetown Keystone Club Hosts Car Show Fundraiser
The Boys & Girls Club at Freetown proudly hosted the 1st Annual Car & Truck Show at Marley Middle School in Glen Burnie to benefit their teen leadership development program - The Keystone Club.
